Termite Fumigation

Termite fumigation definitely raises fears among homeowners, as it is a highly dangerous and toxic procedure. The problem for many homeowners is that there is just no avoiding it. When multiple colonies of drywood termites have invaded your home, there is no way to completely get rid of them except for fumigation. Without fast action like fumigation, your house could be at great risk for serious structural damage. Fumigation is more expensive than any other extermination method, but in the long run, it will save you money by preventing numerous failed termite extermination attempts.

Fumigation is done by releasing a gas called Vikane into your home; it seeps into every crack and corner of your home, killing each and every termite along with all the colonies. A tent, usually made out of a canvas tarp, is placed over the home and sealed for the whole time in which the gas is released — and for many hours after. The entire fumigation process takes about 2-5 days. Air samples are taken to be sure that the air in the home is no longer toxic before homeowners are allowed back in.

Vikane (Sulphuryl Fluoride) is a colorless, odorless gas that is non-staining, non-corrosive and non-flammable. As a gas, Vikane dissipates rapidly into the atmosphere and does not deplete the ozone. There are several steps in the fumigation process:

1. All people, plants, food, medicines and pets are removed from the home. Gas utilities are turned off and each and every cabinet and door is opened. Learn more about termite fumigation preparation.

2. The tarp is placed and sealed and sand bags or sand "snakes" are placed along the foundation to help secure the tarp — and as an extra layer of protection and safety.

3. A warning agent called Chloropicrin (similar to tear gas, but more toxic) is first released into the home or building to ensure that no occupants remain.

4. The Vikane (Vikane is a registered trademark of Dow AgroSciences LLC) gas is released through a hose attached to a cylinder outside your home.

5. After the amount of time needed to fumigate your home, the tent is removed and doors and windows are opened. Fans are turned on to air out the home. The home is then secured again.

6. The homeowner can re-enter after air samples have been taken and the home is approved for re-entry.

It is important to make sure that the exterminator you choose follows additional safety precautions, including using locks, signs and more to protect you, your home and your neighbors during the fumigation process.
