The brown marmorated stink bug is a new threat to local fruit farmers. According to pest control services in Virginia Beach, the stink bug, native to China, Japan and the Korean peninsula, suck liquids from fruits and vegetables, and leave behind saliva that breaks down the interior of the fruit. This renders the fruit unmarketable and farmers are left empty-handed. But the federal government recently enacted an emergency authorization of the use of a special insecticide by Virginia and six other states. Exterminators in Virginia Beach and surrounding Virginia areas say the bugs, which have already cost farmers tens of millions of dollars in produce losses across the country, are resistant to most pesticides. Hopefully the use of the new chemical, called dinotefuron, will put an end to the bug’s damage.
