As if a devastating hurricane wasn’t enough, Chesapeake residents are gearing up for a new threat: mosquitoes. According to pest control services in Chesapeake, Virginia, hurricane Irene’s heavy rains filled places where mosquitoes like to breed with water. Because small pockets of standing water can produce thousands of mosquitoes in just a few weeks, the city is taking pre-emptive measures and hiring Chesapeake exterminators to release 50-100 gallons of larvicide to stop the potential mosquito explosion. Aside for the itchy, irritating bites, mosquitoes can also carry the West Nile virus and Lyme disease, so the city isn’t taking any chances. Officials recommend using insect repellant when outdoors, wearing long clothing, eliminating standing water near your home and installing screens.
