Pest control services in Saint Louis and surrounding Missouri areas say the 13-year cycle of the infamous cicada is up again. The little, noisy, pesky insect hasn’t emerged since 1998, but it’s back, and looking for a mating partner. Saint Louis exterminators say the males try to attract the females by emitting a high-pitched tone, which to humans is downright irritating. But don’t worry, the long-awaited mating period of the cicada will only last for six to eight weeks, after which all the adults die. The new cicadas retreat underground, feeding off a tree root for 13 years, until their time to shine comes, and the cycle continues.
