Stockton became the location of a recent spotting of two Oriental fruit flies. In response, the county’s farm officials in conjunction with pest control services in Stockton, California launched a large-scale trapping effort to determine whether the insect may threaten the area’s $2 billion agricultural industry. While the flies are very small, they’ve been known to have devastating effects on over 230 kinds of fruits and vegetables. According to Stockton exterminators, the flies are widespread in South Asia as well as Hawaii but have not become established on the U.S. mainland. The fear is that the fly will lay eggs inside fruit which hatch into maggots and render it inedible. Though there have been sightings in California before, all infestations were successfully eradicated.
