The strawberry capital of the state, Oxnard is also home to strawberry-damaging lygus bugs. According to exterminators from Oxnard and nearby California cities, the 6 mm long, green-brown, winged insect has a pale green triangle on its back. The bug punctures plant tissue with its mouth and sucks up the sap. Additionally, females insert their eggs into the plant tissue, leaving damaging holes in the strawberry. As a result, some seeds do not fully develop which results in irregularly-shaped fruits. But pest control services in Oxnard say the bug is controllable, if proper measures are taken. These include timing spraying of insecticides correctly, monitoring for the appearance of lygus nymphs on weed hosts, and the release of parasitic wasps that attack lygus eggs.
