The city of Anaheim was founded in 1857 by grape farmers and wine makers from Bavaria. Today its wine industry continues to thrive, but insects are threatening it. Pierce’s disease, which was discovered in the late 19th century in vineyards near Anaheim, was not quite understood until researchers began linking the illness with insect transmission. The disease, which causes plants to die within a few years, wiped out a third of California’s Temecula Valley vineyards.
